Doki the Scientist
Doki (above) with Intelligent Earth CEO David Cumming, and Professor Austin Tate of Edinburgh University, Conference Organiser, on the podium at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence 2005 (IJCAI - 2005). Doki is Britain's best known robot according to the official delegate handout at this premier conference for the world's AI community. Doki was a big success at the conference and was widely praised for his fast face detection, and gender recognition. Doki the Statesman
His Excellency President Adamkus of Lithuania (above) meets Intelligent Earth CEO, David Cumming and Doki during a recent visit to Britain as a guest of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. The President met with Intelligent Earth after asking the Government to introduce him to a selection of Britain's most innovative companies.
Doki correctly recognised His Excellency as a man and exchanged a few words with the President. Doki's Artificial Intelligence Explained During the visit to Intelligent Earth HQ, Stefan Veeser, Intelligent Earth Software Development Director took time to explain some of Doki's artificial intelligence systems to President Adamkus, and the Institute of System Level Integration's Chief Executive, Tony Harker. Doki - World Record Holder Doki is currently featuring in the Guinness Book of Records as 'the world's most gender aware robot.' Doki also has the ability to estimate a person's age, ethnicity, and even whether they are overweight. Doki was 'born' out of a dual need to have a robotic platform for testing real-time image processing applications and also as a PR vehicle for Intelligent Earth. Doki's Dad Before Doki came Doki's Dad. Doki's Dad was literally built overnight by current Intelligent Earth CEO, David Cumming, (ex-Glasgow University and Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, and PhD student of well known engineer, Professor Kevin Warwick at Reading University), Stefan Veeser (ex-Edinburgh AI department, Imperial College Visual Processing Group, and the Mobile Robotics Group, Karlsruhe University, Germany) and Dr. Katherine Goldie, (ex-Edinburgh University Medical School). The company committed at short notice to demonstrate a robot to the press and built and programmed the robot overnight.
Doki's Dad is pictured above with Sandy Findlay, Scottish Enterprise High Growth Business Advisor, Intelligent Earth CEO David Cumming, Intelligent Earth Software Director Stefan Veeser. With the experience gained from building Doki's Dad, the team went on to further develop the robot 'Doki.' And no, Doki was not built in a few hours, although he did become famous 'overnight.' Doki the Ambassador A valuable secondary role for Doki is his work as a publicity vehicle for Intelligent Earth. The UK Foreign Office's London Press Agency pushed one Intelligent Earth press release to British Embassies, who passed it on to thousands of media outlets worldwide. For about a month we could have used about a hundred clones of Doki to answer the phones. Doki's work in this area is continuing.
